The Grihyasutras say that there are five things that must be true about a name for a baby. This is the name that will be used for the child. It depends on the family’s culture, religion, and education, and it should be lucky.
1. The child’s name should be easy to say and sound nice.
2. The name for the baby must have a certain number of syllables and vowels.
3. The new baby’s name should show what gender it is.
4. The baby’s name should have something to do with money, fame, or power.
5. The child’s name should show what caste the family is from.
As there are hundreds of gods and goddesses in the Hindu religion, it is helpful to get names from mythology that have a lot of variety, whether for a boy or a girl. Every name has to mean something, like Atul, which means “cannot be matched,” Abhay, which means “fearless,” Nityanand, which means “endless happiness,” and so on. Choosing a Hindu name is a hard thing to do. For the namkaran ceremony, friends and family are asked to come. In modern times, however, people still do this ceremony, but they do so in a way that fits with the times. When sons and daughters move abroad, it can be hard for people from other countries to say mythological names. So, customs and traditions are still followed, but the names have been kept simple.
